  Friendship With Christmas looming, I could not help but think at about the people in my life.  It has been 4 years since my life fell apart, since I lost everything I held dear save for my son.  I have had many friends or should I say people I thought were friends and realised many stayed for the feast and leave for the famine. I have learnt during the last four years about true friendship and can honestly say today that I have 4 true friends, of course I have many acquaintances and colleagues but true friends 4. Those who would run to my aid when needed and those I can simply pick up the phone and chat because something silly had happened and I simply wanted to tell them about it. We all have different relationships with different friends, the friend you can talk to about absolute rubbish, the friend you can tell your most intimate secrets to, the friend you can turn to for serious advice and the friend you’ve known forever, no matter what they will always be there. Friendship is a combination of these things and as life takes over you learn to choose who can handle your woes at any given time and those that need you to pick them up and indeed those that will take your criticism without offence.    It’s The Party Season Yep it’s that time of year again, drinking and eating far too much, the constant invites and the unwillingness to say no, until you peruse that vast wardrobe and discover you have nothing to wear. The truth is you have many outfits just nothing that fits. I went from a size 10 to a size 14 in such a short period and felt fat. It’s as simple as that. It was Wednesday and the boat party was on Thursday, what was I going to do. Yes, before you think it, go shopping.  Shopping is great when you feel comfortable in your own skin. I do not, I feel ugly and extremely overweight and thus shopping makes me feel depressed. Tuesday night I took a water pill. Ladies water pills are not good for your kidneys and doctors are extremely reluctant to prescribe them but when your feet are so swollen that you end up at the doctor’s surgery in your flip-flops because you can’t put a pair of shoes on, trust me after a little begging they will prescribe it. I am not suggesting you do this but I did. After running to the toilet throughout the night, I weighed myself the following morning and discovered I was 5 lbs lighter. However, remember this was excess water, not fat loss. Next salt water flush, I read this will reduce your weight by at least 7 to 8 lbs.   Mr Right or Mr All Wrong? Finding that someone special is especially hard when you are over 40 and a single mum.  Gone are the days of clubbing and going out every week. Let’s take a look: Brussels sprouts: An ultimate liver-cleansing food, providing a vast array of chemical compounds and phytonutrients. The sulphur compounds found specifically in brussels sprouts are different from those in any other food in the cruciferous (that is, Brassica) family, as they’re derived from the large mother stalk upon which the little baby brussels sprouts grow. I have been making beef stew with dumplings for the shoot and all the guns hug me after their lunch and kiss me cos I gave them Custard. To keep people happy feed them what they want . Shin Of Beef I mix beef shin with cubes of casserole beef and this makes for a rich sauce and tastier meat . Cooked on a low heat for 5 hours. I mix horseradish sauce and fresh parsley into the dumpling mix to give a bit more interest to the dumplings . Place them on top of the stew 30 mins before serving. Take the lid off for 15 mins at the end and watch them crunch up. To Be or Not to Be In some cultures, marriage for women is a natural course of growing up and through marriage comes children. In these cultures, parents feel it is their duty to ensure that girls make a good marriage. What does this mean? That their girls marry a man that can support them and look after them. I am not going to criticise certain practices but I am going to say those who have arranged marriages it should be about more than financial stability. Let us not confuse culture with religion. No religion that exists today dictates arrange marriages. It does however in the fifth commandment state honour your father and mother. In Islam, be dutiful to your parents, this entails a whole host of things but not marriage specifically. Hindu’s are brought up in the belief that mother comes first, then father, teacher and lastly god. In all religions respecting and obeying ones parents is a way of showing gratitude for bringing you up. All religions are about respect to your parents. I am not going to go through a full explanation of the different religions but I am going to reiterate no religion states that your parents should choose whom you marry. This is a cultural practice. To obey and respect your parents is not about doing everything they say especially when they are wrong and yes parents can make the wrong decisions for us, they are only human after all.
