Relaxing Rituals

Relaxing Rituals

Or Receiving Pleasure from the Performance   When it is time to relax or take a breather, don’t you find that sitting down to a hot drink is a perfect solution? We have a whole ritual around hot drinks and actually most of us do, without even realising.  It is fair to say many Brits now drink coffee far more than we used to – people are always walking around with the ubiquitous paper/plastic (non recyclable) cup with requisite lid a, looking dreadfully busy and important. However, sitting down to enjoy these drinks is vital because drinking on the go leads to scorched lips! If you are lucky enough to have the time, preparation is everything for your hot beverage. There is a lot of etiquette around the preparation of a great cup of tea, which we can’t go into right now, but it is probably fair to say that they type of crockery you use will make a difference to the overall experience. In reality, many of us use mugs, but if you’re drinking a fancy, delicately flavoured tea, then maybe you could consider a fine china cup? Also warming the cup or mug before adding any tea is a ritual that really does make a difference in our experience, though we’re not quite sure why. Also loose leaf versus tea bag is another topic that really never goes away. In reality, practicality may dictate your tea type, as some varieties are not found in tea bags, making loose leaf more exotic and expensive. And there is also the idea vessel, the teapot, that makes everything taste...
Healthy Bakes

Healthy Bakes

Baking to be Beautiful Does anyone watch the Great British Bake Off? Perhaps that is a silly question because even though the programme has a new line up, it is probably still going to be as popular as before. Although we are all about Healthy living, there is nothing like a slice of cake as a treat now and again. And in reality, there are ways to incorporate treats into a healthy lifestyle, you just have to be creative and innovative with new recipes. On cookery programmes, most of the time the celebrity chefs or enthusiastic amateurs use sumptuous ingredients and make decadent delicacies to make our mouths water. However with a bit of tweaking, dishes you make at home can be healthy and still stay delicious, if you are clever. When baking, one of the easiest things modify is the type of flour. A nutty spelt flour, or a rich wholemeal flour can provide more flavour and nutrients than plain white flour. Grain free flours are also an alternative, especially for biscuits. Obviously, you won’t get exactly the same result and this won’t apply to every single recipe, but with a bit of practice, you can develop your own versions of classic bakery recipes. Moving away from white sugar to brown sugar or even honey can still deliver sweetness, however, why not go a step further and use dates or beetroot in recipes? These both have natural sugar but with fibre, some natural antioxidant activity and can bring new texture to any cake batter. Chocolate cakes work especially well with these flavours as cocoa is rich and deep...

Anna’s Story – Anna’s dream holiday destinations

Anna’s Story – Anna’s dream holiday destinations

Lets take a Trip   Although it is still Summer, I am thinking about my holidays for next year already! Most of my dream destinations are in Asia. Firstly, I have always wanted to go to Japan, in my opinion, the culture is one of the best and most sophisticated around.  As it is an island, I feel it is the lack of space has caused greater understanding between people and a sensitivity to people’s needs that I think we could all learn a lot from.   The Japanese have a wonderful sense of caring for each other and their community which is very interesting and I would really like to explore more about this one day. Also, as I am not a lying-on-the-beach person, so for me to explore Japan, its mountains and its gardens would a dream. As a keen gardener, I would like a lesson in Japanese pruning techniques for plants and to really learn more about Bonsai, one of the most sophisticated forms of gardening, which is closely aligned with the Japanese approach to spirituality. Next on my travel wish list is to follow in the steps of the great plant hunters and go to North East China and the Himalayan foothills, to discover the famous plants, which  we now have hybridised in our gardens, growing in their natural habitats. That would be an amazing and inspiring trip and I’d have to take a very good camera to capture these plants in all their glory. I also think the culture of Tibet to be one of the most interesting I’ve learned about. I am fascinated and want...
Benefits of Healthy Communication

Benefits of Healthy Communication

Be Clear to Communicate If you’re interested in Astrology, the planet Mercury is in currently in retrograde i.e moving in the opposite direction to planet Earth, for the next 3 weeks. Mercury is the planet of communication so when it is in retrograde, this is said to affect all aspects of communication and during this phase, there is a greater chance for us to experience misunderstandings, arguments, confusion and stress. People are even advised not to sign contracts or make big decisions during this time! We are not experts in astral matters here so this might be something to take with a pinch of salt, however it is true that there are often times in our lives when whatever we say just comes out wrong or causes unnecessary offence, making life difficult and stressful. Being able to express yourself fluently and clearly to others is a key life skill that needs continual development. Sharing our feelings and ideas is so vital and yet can become very complicated if we are not careful. Bottling up your feelings can lead to extreme stress however, which is definitely unhealthy. If you feel you have to tip toe around an issue but then you find this problem won’t go away, perhaps you need some help. Most of us do, in fact. Tackling the issue is vital – unresolved conflict can lead to long term tension which may affect other aspects of your life. Obviously, talking to a close friend or family member may be beneficial, just getting things off your chest can make a huge difference. But if you feel that there are...

Keep your Soul and Spirit Healthy With Prayer

Keep your Soul and Spirit Healthy With Prayer

How do you keep your mind healthy and what relaxation techniques have helped you in times of stress? I have had several periods of massive stress in my life, as I’m sure we all have and I will talk more about these in the future. Looking back however, I have to say that my faith and the power of Prayer, have carried me through these circumstances and given me the strength I needed to move on peacefully. In the Great Welsh revival of 1904, “Prayer moves the hand that moves the World” was a phrase frequently used to explain the outpouring of miracles and healing that came about at that time through profound prayer. Prayer and meditation are disciplines of spirituality, no matter which faith you profess.  I follow a Christian path through choice but no matter which faith or religion you follow, I believe very strongly that that Prayer and meditation can wash pollutive and negative clutter from your mind and help to free you from unhealthy emotions. There are no rules, you can pray in all situations, for example, before an important meeting, before a meal, on a train, on a bus, or even on a plane. Irrespective of the time or location, Prayer can help you meet a troubling situation in a state of calm, to find that decision making becomes a breeze. I always go to a quiet place where I can be alone with myself, without intrusion, in order to pray. I find this enhances my relationship with the God I serve, and I focus on my heart, not on my mind. In my...
Give yourself some Summer  Loving Beauty Treatments

Give yourself some Summer  Loving Beauty Treatments

Pampering Treats Made Easy When was the last time you went for a beauty treatment? A massage, manicure, pedicure or a facial?  Once in a blue moon probably, but actually, nothing is stopping us from treating ourselves at home every now and again, without breaking the bank. Continuing on our theme of improving well being to stay healthy, any activity that involves an element of self- care can lift your spirits and calm your mind. We can quite easily incorporate relaxation into our lives more regularly. Of course, if you are able to have one of these sessions on a regular basis, all the better. But in the real world, we may have to squeeze in the luxury indulgences when the opportunity arises. So, how about something simple like a facial?  You can make yourself feel better just by spending an extra few minutes on your face. Try gently removing any make up with a clean flannel dipped in warm water and applying a slightly thicker layer of your usual cleanser preferably a balm or lotion. Leave this on your face for around 5 minutes, and then rinse off with cool or cold water.  Wipe everything off gently with the flannel, apply some toner to your face with a cotton pad, before adding a layer  of your favourite moisturiser to finish.  That is a quick but effective facial. Or you could try a face mask, these days it is easy to find the single use products. Masking is fun, but do make sure your family are prepared to see you looking scary for a few minutes! To really...
